You would think I could plan ahead better. I can but I thought I would be more functional for a little longer. Opps…
We are in the middle of an extensive remodel of the entire house. While we love our home that we had custom built 15 yrs ago, a refresh was in order. The master suite was done in phase 1. A great refresh for the next 20 years.
Now on to phase 2, the main floor which includes the kitchen. The layout is great and is wide open to the rest of the house. Now try to move out everything including every closet and cabinet. It becomes a bit overwhelming. The great room, the den, guest bath, laundry room and the kitchen… that is what we’ll talk about.
The kitchen lacked storage and needed a refresh but not a total redesign. We are keeping the lower cabinets and granite counters. But the upper cabinets will be replaced with custom to go to the ceiling but doors to match the bottom and all painted to match.
The appliances are all new in the last few years. I really want to comment on the stove. It’s electric… not gas. Now we watch a lot of HGTV and Food Network and see everybody comment on “I must have gas”. No electric stove has survived a remodel yet. I guess I shouldn’t judge but some of these people would seem to have a hard time with a microwave but need a 6 burner professional gas stove… really?
I cook more than 90% of them and I’m fine (and prefer) electric. I can afford any stove I want. When we replace the stove 2 years ago, we went with a similar smooth top electric. Easier clean up. More control. I will concede the need in larger families for more burners and there are personal preferences involved. But electric is just fine for most of us.
So how can a food blogger use electric and prefer it? What is the secret? Only one. BUY GOOD PANS. They conduct heat so much better. Years ago we were considering a switch to gas. We took it as a given that you could not get the heat needed on electric. But as we were looking and debating, I got several new better quality pans. We started to burn everything. Suddenly there seemed a reason that burners had settings between off and high. BUY GOOD PANS.
OK back on task here. So I have one post partly done. I have the pictures but looking for my note that got caught up in the moving of things. I had plans for 2-3 more to be done this week you all might not even know what was going on. BUT the schedule of painters and contractors has done me in.
So I will find my notes. Maybe the grill will thaw out. Maybe a few posts about under appreciated recipes. Maybe I will just muse.
