📋 TL;DR — Recipe Summary

What is it? An easy baked fruit dessert with apples, berries, and a buttery crumb topping.

Why you'll love it? A flexible recipe using fresh fruit or a shortcut version with frozen berries and pie filling. Easily adjusted for two or a family-size dessert.

How to make it? Mix the fruit filling, add the crumb topping, and bake until golden brown and bubbling.

🍏 Ingredients

🍎 Using Fresh Apples

To use fresh apples: Peel and slice 4 large or 5–6 medium apples to make about 5 cups of slices. Toss with lemon juice, then coat with a mixture of sugar, flour, and cinnamon.

Best apples: Granny Smith and Gala are excellent choices. Honeycrisp, Ida Red, and Roma also work well. Mixing varieties adds flavor and texture. Avoid Red Delicious and Macintosh, which can become soft when baked.

Fresh apples provide the best flavor and texture, but you can substitute a can of apple pie filling for a quick semi-homemade version.

🫐 What Berries to Use?

Fresh or frozen blueberries are the most common choice, but blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, or mixed berries also work well. If using strawberries, cut them into smaller pieces before baking.

Frozen berries work just as well as fresh and do not need to be thawed.

👍 Variations and Options

  • Different fruit: Use peach pie filling instead of apple pie filling.
  • Make it a crisp: Add ¼ cup quick oats to the topping and reduce the flour by the same amount.
  • Add nuts: Mix ¼ cup sliced almonds, chopped walnuts, or chopped pecans into the crumble topping. Reduce the flour by the same amount.
  • Change the flavor: Replace half the sugar in the apple mixture with brown sugar or add ¼ teaspoon vanilla or allspice.

↕️ How to Make This a “For Two” or Family-Size Recipe

The full recipe makes about 6 servings and fits nicely in an 8-by-8 or 6-by-9 baking dish.

  • Use the recipe card to adjust the number of servings.
  • Use the ingredient amounts in the recipe card, not the instructions, which do not adjust automatically.
  • A half recipe fits in a 6-inch round baking dish or 2 to 3 ramekins for individual servings.
  • A double recipe fits in a 9-by-13 baking dish.

Bake until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling around the edges. A half recipe may cook a little faster, while a double recipe may take a few extra minutes.

📆 Making Ahead

Fresh baked is best, but you can prepare the components ahead of time. Store the crumble topping in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. The fruit filling can be prepared up to 2 days ahead and refrigerated separately.

You can also bake the crumble ahead of time and reheat in a 300°F oven for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

🍽️ Serving

Serve warm, topped with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla or butter pecan ice cream.

❄️ Storing Leftovers

Store covered in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven until warmed through.

❓ FAQs

Can I use a different pie filling?

Yes. Any fruit pie filling will work, including peach, cherry, blueberry, or mixed fruit pie filling.

Do I need to thaw frozen berries?

No. Frozen berries can be added directly to the filling without thawing.

What is the difference between a crumble, crisp, and cobbler?

A cobbler has a biscuit or cake-like topping. Crumbles and crisps are very similar, but a crisp usually contains oats in the topping while a crumble does not. The terms are often used interchangeably.

What are the best berries for apple and berry crumble?

Blueberries are the most common choice, but blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and mixed berries all work well. Use fresh or frozen berries based on what you have available.
