So how is a recipe like the Pirate's Code?

Updated: Jan 17, 2023 · Published: Jan 1, 2010 by Dan Mikesell AKA DrDan · 7 Comments

Welcome to 101 Cooking for Two.

I'm DrDan, and this is my cooking blog. I felt this post was the most fitting first post even though it was published originally on January 20, 2010, 20 days after the blog's start.

So how is a recipe like the Pirate's Code?

Think about it. What is the pirate's code? Did you hear it in a movie? Do you really care?

Answer: Captain Barbossa to Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean:

"First, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement, so I must do nothing, and secondly, you must be a pirate for the Pirate's Code to apply, and you're not, and thirdly the code is more of what you call guidelines than actual rules."

Part three of this quote is the answer.

So a recipe is "more of what you call guidelines than actual rules." So guidelines... GOT IT... not rules...

I consider it playtime. Time to experiment. Add this... substitute that.. change to your taste, or use what you have. Just don't blame me for the results if you do...

So relax and enjoy your cooking... they're just guidelines, REALLY.

Many people, including "Foodies," take this way too seriously. You can always order pizza.

Note: I have moved this post to the blog's beginning as I have reorganized the blog and pruned posts and recipes that needed to go. Some early posts did not even have pictures, and some were lost. The writing was not very good, and some recipes didn't fit the blog anymore.

Many have been rewritten and moved up in the timeline to current dates. So the early months that many times had 15-20 recipes now have only a few.

Hi, a good friend just shared your blog with me. I’m in an apartment now for the very first time, I’m 65 years old. I’m not used to cooking for just me which is why she shared your blog with me. I only started reading your blog and I’m at the Comments Policy so far. I thought I’d ask this question. I love grilled food, do they make grills for indoor cooking?

      Hi Donna,

Welcome to the blog and please enjoy the recipes.

About inside grills, of course, they need to be electric. A grill pan on the stove works for many of the recipes but there are dedicated grills for inside use. I have never needed one but with a little research, you should be able to find what you need. I do know they are not very big and are not what you should be used for large things like brisket, pork butt, or whole chickens.

Hope that helps some but ask anything you want.

      Dan

I am just now discovering your blog. Found it while looking for how to cook bacon in the oven. My husband hates the bacon splatter. No matter how well I clean he finds more. LOL. Can we say “a little OCD”? The recipes look wonderful and I can’t wait to try them. So glad I found you.

I am so excited to find your blog! I found it for the bacon cooking oven recipe. I KNEW it in my head but I'm a senior, senior and have those silly memory lapses! My point is, I enjoy cooking just for me and ALL or most recipes are for 4 or 6? So, I put a lot in the freezer or eat it every day for a week - not good! I LOVE your cheat sheets and now I'm going to try some of the recipes. I'd like to get away from 'mostly chicken' and I am experimenting with India Masala - great spices! Thank you for what you do; it's fun and exciting ...

      Hi Patricia,
Welcome to the blog... I thought nobody ever read this page that I still love...
I wish all my recipes were for 2 but it really means I'm cooking for two and most recipes are cut down as much as reasonable but there are still lots of left-overs.

While I have lots of chicken, my wife called my blog "all pig all the time" for the first few years. I think it reflects my Iowa ties.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know.

      Dan

I though I was the only one ever to see this... but it is so true. My fellow food bloggers and some of my visitors need to calm down a little. I think they need injectable drugs sometimes (and I'm allowed to do that).

I enjoy my cooking and love to change things up. But I always have Pizza Hut on speed dial.

      Have a great holiday.

      Dan
